Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY- It was another tight game at Centre 200 but the Eagles found themselves on the losing end of a 4-2 score to the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
It was the power play getting results for both teams in an evenly played opening twenty minutes. Drummondville captain Charles-Antoine Dumont started the scoring at the 11:28 mark with a short from the front of the goal. The Eagles countered in the dying seconds of the period. Zachary Gravel slid the puck down the left wing to Cam Squires who ripped it across the crease from Samuel Johnson, who put the puck over Jacob Goobie to tie the game. The score- and the shots (nine a piece) were locked after the first frame.
Drummondville took the lead early in the second period, albeit they had to wait for their reward. Simon Hughes knocked the puck out of the air and it found its way over the goal line, but it wasn't ruled a goal until another minute of hockey was played and video review confirmed it went over the line.
The Volts couldn't capitalize on a big opportunity to add to the lead, as Dumont was denied on a short handed breakway by DiMattia. However, the Volts killed the penalty and later in the period added to the lead courtesy of Tyler Peddle.
In the final five minutes of the middle stanza, Squires and Johnson would connect again for the Eagles. Squires had Ivan Ivan as a passing option but elected to drop the puck to Johnson who pulled the trigger to make it a 3-2 game.
The scoring chances were limited in the third period, just six shots a piece, as the visitors clogged up the middle of the ice. The only goal found was an insurance marker, as Jérémy Lapointe found himself alone in front of the net and wired it by DiMattia to make it a 4-2 game.
In the final minute, the Eagles pulled DiMattia for an extra attacker and created chances, but couldn't find the back of the net and the Volts secured a 4-2 victory.
Goobie picked up the win, stopping 20 of 22 shots. DiMattia turned aside 20 of 24 in the loss.
With the injuries to three defensemen, the Eagles recalled defenseman Lincoln Waugh who made his QMJHL debut. The 16 year old Waugh was selected 48th overall in the third round of the 2022 draft.
The Eagles will next be in action on Tuesday night when they visit the Wildcats in Moncton, the first game of the season between the rival clubs. Puck drop on Friday is at 7 PM.
