Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles created the bulk of the chances as the game went on but fell 4-1 to the Moncton Wildcats on Saturday evening in QMJHL exhibition action at Centre 200.

It took a while for both sides to create opportunity as the shots were one a piece at the 12 minute mark , and it was scoreless after the first period.

But despite being scoreless in the first, it didn't take long for the scoring to get going in the second period as Gabriel Bernier tipped a Nicolas Pavan shot by Eagles starting goalie Nicolas Ruccia. Just before Ruccia was to be replaced at the halfway mark, Moncton defenseman Jordan Spence fired a shot in the top corner from inside the blueline to double the lead for the visitors.

Not long after Jack Cashen came into the game for the Eagles, Moncton's Yoan Loshing put the puck in a simliar spot make it a 3-0 score. That would hold until the end of the period.

The Eagles did their best work in the third period, outshooting Moncton 13-4, peppering netminder Nicholas Sheehan who replaced Dakota Lund-Cornish to start the final frame. The pressure paid off at the 8:28 mark when Liam Kidney pushed the puck over the line in a goal mouth scramble and the shutout was broken.

There would be more great chances for the home team- including mutliple hit cross bars- but a second goal was not to be found. And just seconds after Sheehan denied Colby Huggan on a 2 on 1, Moncton's Philippe Daoust wired it over Cashen to complete the scoring for the day.

Ruccia took the loss, allowing two goals on seven shots, while Cashen allowed two of nine shots. Lund-Cornish was

given the win, stopping all ten shots, while Sheehan stopped 12 of 13 in his one period of action.

The Eagles are next in action on Sunday, September 13th, as they visit the Moncton Wildcats. The game will be streamed on the Wildcats' YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF1FjNEXyLE

In the next 24 hours, the Eagles are expected to make many decisions regarding the club's final roster for the 2020-21 QMJHL season. Stay tuned to the Eagles social media and website for more information.
