Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - A tough stretch of games continued for the Eagles on Thursday night as they were defeated 8-3 by the Victoriaville Tigres at Centre 200.

There were certainly no signs of a blowout early as it took the game ten minutes to find its first goal. After the Eagles failed to score, an odd man rush developed and Vincent Sévigny found the back of the net to open the scoring for the visitors.

Trouble began for the home team when Kiefer Lyons was given a five minute major and a game misconduct for attempting to fight Egor Goriunov, who was not given a penalty on the play. Victoriaville would convert twice before penalty's end: first captain Conor Frenette finishing a passing play and then Tommy Cormier burying a shot from the right faceoff circle.

It looked as though it would be a 3-0 scoreline for the visitors at the break, but Ivan Ivan put the home side on the board with a nice deke around Nikolas Hurtubise. Nicholas Girouard, playing his first game since October 20th, drew an assist on the goal in his return from injury.

More than anything the late goal for the Eagles seemed to halt momentum for both sides with a bit of a tentative start to the second stanza. But again, it was the Victoriaville power play that got things moving as Maxime Pellerin found a tap-in at the side of the goal to make it 4-1. In the final 2:02 of the period, Victoriaville added two more to their lead as Nikita Prishchepov and Conor Frenette hit the back of the net.

Loick Daigle lifted the puck over the shoulder of Nicolas Ruccia in the third period to create a 7-1 edge, although the goal was countered by a Sean Larcohelle point shot, scoring against his old team to make it 7-2. Victoriaville's Egor Goriunov and Cape Breton's Jack Campbell each scored before game's end to conclude the scoring. The action on the box score was not finished for the evening, however, as in the final five seconds Jacob Squires of the Eagles was given a five minute major for cross-checking.

Hurtubise picked up the win, stopping 23 of 26 shots. Ruccia was given the loss, allowing eight goals on 42 shots.

The Eagles home stand continues on Saturday when they host the Drummondville Voltigeurs, who are making their only visit of the season. It will mark the first appearance as a visiting player by long time Eagle forward Liam Kidney. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.ticketmaster.ca/cape-breton-eagles-tickets/artist/891825.
