Cape Breton Eagles News Release
HALIFAX - A potent Halifax power play set the tone early en route to a 9-3 victory over the Cape Breton Eagles on Tuesday night.
It was a tentative start to the game, with the teams each just registering a shot on goal in the opening five minutes. (The best opportunity may have come when Cape Breton's Romain Rodzinski whipped a shot off of the post.) The breakthrough came for the home side when a rebound came out to Zach Beauregard in front of the net to give Halifax a 1-0 edge.
The Eagles found themselves in trouble when Charles Savoie was given a five minute major and a game misconduct for high sticking. In the opening minute of the man advantage, Elliot Desnoyers converted a cross crease pass only to be denied by a spectacular Rémi Delafontaine glove grab- or so it appeared. While Delafontaine did snag the puck, a lengthy review showed that his glove was entirely over the goal line.
The call gave a lift to Halifax. Before penalty's end, Evan Boucher twice found the back of the net and it was 4-0 game. The Eagles were given a promising sign heading into the intermission as at the final second of the opening frame, Beauregard was given four minutes for high sticking. The Eagles couldn't score on the power play- but did convert shortly after when Carter McCluskey found the back of the net from a sharp angle.
McCluskey's goal appeared to give the Eagles some momentum but it was short lived as Boucher completed his hat trick just 92 seconds after the Eagles goal. Halifax added to the lead when Desnoyers completed a nice feed from Jordan Dumais, who would also assist on a Mathieu Cataford goal before period's end. It was the sixth assist of the night for Dumais, tying a Mooseheads team record for most assists in a game.
Halifax held a 7-1 lead heading into the third period, a final stanza that would see the teams trade goals twice. Logan Camp used some nice hand eye coordination to bat a puck out of the air to make it 7-2 on the power play, but Boucher countered with his fourth goal of the night just ten seconds later. James Swan further added to the lead for Halifax, but the last goal of the night came off the stick of Conor Shortall- just off the crossbar and over the goal line, deemed a good goal after a lengthy review.
Brady James picked up the win, stopping 31 of 34 shots. Delafontaine allowed nine goals on 37 shots.
