Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY- The Screaming Eagles snatched away a literal last second 3-2 victory from the Saint John Sea Dogs in overtime at the Nest. 2 seconds remained on the clock in overtime as Egor Sokolov's shot went over Alex D'Orio.

Cape Breton dominated the first period, outshooting Saint John 16-3, with the Sea Dogs first shot not coming until past the halfway mark. It took just 2:39 for the scoring to begin, as Gabriel Proulx put the home side on the board. The next mark on the summary sheet would come in the form of fisticuffs as the Screaming Eagles' Declan Smith dropped the gloves with Saint John's Alexis Girard. Girard had taken exception to a hit by Smith to Kevin Mason, but there was no penalty for the clean hit.

There was a penalty on Gabriel Proulx when the play resumed for charging, but the Eagles would earn the biggest chance when Ty Fournier earned a breakaway. He was unable to score but at the 12:10 mark Shaun Miller would tip a point shot past Alex D'Orio for an even strength goal and a 2-0 lead. The Eagles would hold the edge at period's end when Kevin Mandolese denied Robbie Burt on a breakaway.

Saint John would get on the board in the middle period, when Aidan MacIntosh scored the first goal of his major junior career at 4:12. The second stanza would also see the home team get their first power play opportunities, but they were unable to solve D'Orio again. The Sea Dogs' netminder produced his best save when his team was short handed, sprawling forward to deny Eagles captain Phélix Martineau.

Having been outshot 21-7 in the second frame, the Sea Dogs held on to trail 2-1 going into the third period. The tying goal would come courtesy of Anthony Boucher who converted a pass from the front of the goal at the 5:17 mark. There was no further scoring in regulation as the teams both earned a point for being tied after 60 minutes.

It didn't look like there would be scoring in overtime, as both teams played very conservatively, not wanting the other to take advantage of the open ice. But with eight seconds left Egor Sokolov would enter the Sea Dog zone. Mathias Laferrière jumped into the play, dropped the puck to Sokolov who snapped it over D'Orio for a dramatic game winner. It's the first time in six meetings between the two clubs this season the home team has picked up the victory.

Mandolese turned aside 15 of 17 in the win, while D'Orio stopped 48 of 51 in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles continue a home stand as they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan this Friday night. Puck drop is 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
