Eagles Blank Foreurs at Pink in the Rink
SYDNEY - Wearing pink jerseys on home ice for the first time in two years, the Eagles picked up their first home win in 2021 as goaltender Nicolas Ruccia collected his first career shutout. The Eagles topped the visiting Val-d'Or Foreurs 2-0 at Centre 200 on Friday night.
While both teams had chances in a quick opening period, the Eagles doubled the Foreurs on the shot clock by a count of 8-4 and struck first for the opening period's lone goal- Ivan Ivan setting up a Dawson Stairs shot in the left faceoff circle at the 12:06 mark. It was 1-0 score after 20 minutes that were all played five on five.
Despite both teams having power play opportunities in the middle stanza, neither team could find the back of the net. Val-d'Or's power play carried into the third period but they were unable to cash in with the fresh sheet of ice.
It remained a one goal game until the Eagles received a power play after the halfway mark in the third period. After assisting on the Stairs goal, Ivan Ivan ripped his own goal from between the faceoff circles on the man advantage.
Val-d'Or pressed hard, outshooting the Eagles 10-4 in the period, but the Eagles defense and goaltender Nicolas Ruccia stood tall. With 1:35 to play in the third period, coach Maxime Desruisseaux lifted goaltender William Blackburn for an extra attacker. The bulk of the remaining time was played 5 on 4 after penalties to Cape Breton's Cam Squires and Val-d"Or's Kale McCallum, but the extra space couldn't help the Foreurs find the back of the net.
Ruccia turned aside all 24 shots in picking up his first career shutout. Blackburn stopped 22 of 24 shots in the the loss.
The Eagles will now head to Halifax on Sunday afternoon to take on the Mooseheads. Puck drop is at 3 PM. The game is also available for purchase online at https://watch.chl.ca.
