Eagles Begin Road Trip with Shootout Loss in Shawinigan
January 4, 2024 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
The Eagles got the start they were looking for, as Burbidge's goal came just 65 seconds into the game. The goal was upheld after a lengthy review. But Klima's equaliser came before the three-minute mark, and his second goal in the final six minutes put Shawinigan out in front. A backhand from Roy spelled the end of the night for Milota before the end of the opening period.
Chances were hard to come by for both teams in the middle stanza, with zero shots being registered in the opening minutes. It remained a two goal margin heading into the third frame.
Romeo made an impact in the third period, with both goals coming as a result of crashing the net. His first marker came in the opening two minutes on the power play, and his tying goal came at the 10:41 mark.
A string of penalties towards the end of regulation put Shawinigan on brief 5 on 4 and then 4 on 3 power plays before the final minutes of overtime were played three on three. Neither team could find the back of the net in the extra session.
Offense remained hard to come by in the shootout, with Cape Breton's Olivier Houde & Lucas Romeo and Shawinigan's Evan Courtois & Jiri Klima failing to score. Lou-Félix Denis outwaited Ruccia to produce the first and only shootout goal, and the game concluded when Burbidge was unable to counter.
The Eagles continue their Quebec road trip in Quebec City tomorrow night against the Remparts.
Game time is 8 PM AST. The game is available for purchase on https://shorturl.at/dsu24 and you can also hear all the action on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com.
