Houston Dynamo FC News Release
The Houston Dynamo earned their largest victory of the season, a 4-0 route over Eastern Conference rival D.C. United at BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday night. The Dynamo took advantage of playing with an extra man after D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid was sent off in the 17th minute, with Brad Davis, Will Bruin, Boniek Garcia and Brian Ching making the score sheet as the club produced its third consecutive shutout.
The Dynamo improved to 5-0-3 in regular season games at BBVA Compass Stadium and increased their home unbeaten streak to 17 games since their last defeat, June 18, 2011.
It was the first time the Dynamo have scored four goals in a game since defeating D.C. United, 4-1, on April 29, 2011 at Robertson Stadium. It was the third time in four years that the Dynamo have scored four goals in a home game against D.C. United.
It was also Houston's largest margin of victory in an MLS game since Aug. 20, 2008, when it defeated Chivas USA, 4-0, at Robertson Stadium.
The game turned in the 17th minute, as Dynamo forward Macoumba Kandji got in behind the United defense before he was taken down in the box by Hamid. Referee Jasen Anno immediately pointed to the penalty spot and issued Hamid a red card.
Joe Willis replaced Hamid in net but couldn't stop Davis' penalty, taken perfectly into the left side of the net past Willis' dive for a 1-0 lead and his fifth goal of the season.
Willis prevented Houston from adding to its lead two minutes later, diving far to his left to save a curling shot from Davis' right foot that was heading toward the far upper corner.
In the 37th minute Will Bruin would finish a clear chance for his tenth goal of the year. Midfielder Boniek Garcia slipped a good pass into the penalty area to Luiz Camargo, who made a clever move around Brandon McDonald at the end line before laying the ball across the box to Bruin, who smashed it home from ten yards.
It was Bruin's team-leading tenth goal of the season and 15th career regular season goal, with the second-year forward tying Stuart Holden for fourth on the Dynamo franchise list. It was also Bruin's sixth goal in five career games against United.
Garcia scored his first MLS goal in the 62nd minute, completing another impressive passing sequence from Houston. After some quick ball movement in front of the penalty area, Davis found Andre Hainault alone near the corner. Hainault delivered a quality ball toward the back corner of the six-yard box, where Garcia headed it into the far side-netting for a 3-0 lead.
Dynamo forward Calen Carr returned to the field for the first time since a hamstring injury on June 16 and entered as a second half substitute. Carr earned a penalty kick on a sliding challenge from United midfielder Danny Cruz in the box. Ching took the penalty, and lofted it into the center of the net to round out the scoring for his third goal of the campaign.
It was Ching's 80th career MLS goal to move into a tie for 12th on the all-time MLS scoring chart with Josh Wolff and Brian McBride.
Tally Hall earned his third consecutive shutout and lengthened his shutout steak to 313 minutes. Hall has seven shutouts on the year after reaching six in 2011.
Bruin is tied for third in the MLS scoring race with Alvaro Saborio of Real Salt Lake.
It was Dynamo midfielder Geoff Cameron's 100th regular season start. Cameron is the sixth player in franchise history to make 100 starts in Orange.
The Dynamo (7-5-7; 28 points) remain in fifth place in the Eastern Conference but grew their lead over sixth-place New England to six points.
Houston won the season series with D.C., with two wins in the three games. D.C. United has never won in Houston, with an 0-7-1 mark since 2006.
The Dynamo continue the vital three-game homestand on Wednesday at BBVA Compass Stadium with a key Eastern Conference match against first-place Sporting Kansas City
