Dust Devils Threaten in 9th, But AquaSox Secure Shutout

July 12, 2022 - Northwest League (NWL)
Tri-City Dust Devils News Release

The Tri-City Dust Devils (6-10 2H, 35-44) got the potential tying run to third base in the bottom of the 9th inning, but the Everett AquaSox (9-7 2H, 40-41) got the final out to complete a 1-0 shutout Tuesday night at Gesa Stadium.

The final Dust Devil threat started with a two-out walk drawn by Gabe Matthews. Jose Guzman pinch-ran for him and made it from first base to third on a Mitch Nay single. Mike Peabody then hit a slow grounder to the right side, but the AquaSox's Mike Salvatore shoveled the ball with his glove to first to beat a sliding Peabody to the bag to end the game.

Nay's single was one of only two hits for Tri-City on the night. Kyren Paris struck a one-out single in the 4th inning, the only hit off Everett starter Prelander Berroa.

The AquaSox's lone run came in the 7th inning on a Victor Labrada triple down the right field line off Dust Devil lefty Connor Higgins (0-1). The hit scored James Parker, who walked to lead off the inning.

Matthew Willrodt (1-1) pitched two innings in relief of Berroa for the win. Kyle Hill finished the 9th inning for his fourth save of 2022.

Despite the loss the Dust Devils' bullpen setup pitched well, giving up a run on five hits for the whole ballgame. Zac Kristofak threw three scoreless innings, with Jake Smith following with two scoreless. Nathan Burns, Dylan King and Dakota Donovan added scoreless frames in the effort.

Game two of the six-game set between Tri-City and Everett takes place at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night at Gesa Stadium. It's Weenie Wednesday at the ballpark, with $2 hot dogs to enjoy all night thanks to Vern's Food Service.

You can listen to the game beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the King Beverage Budweiser Pregame Show at dustdevilsbaseball.com and the MiLB First Pitch app.
