Emeralds Fall Short to Spokane to Start the Series

July 12, 2022 - Northwest League (NWL)
Eugene Emeralds News Release

The Emeralds go scoreless to start the series against the Spokane Indians in Eugene.

Keaton Winn took the mound for Eugene. Within the span of four innings, he allowed seven hits, two runs, no walks, and struck out three. Despite his performance, the Indians took advantage of the Emeralds' mistakes.

Spokane got ahead early by taking advantage of a passed ball in the first inning. Braiden Ward, an outfielder for the Indians, scored on a balk in the top of the fourth inning.

Nick Morreale entered the game for the Emeralds in the fifth inning. He didn't stay long as the Indians broke open the game in the same inning.

The inning started with a home run from Spokane's third baseman Warming Bernabel. Later in the same inning, Ward singles on a ground ball to right field, and one more run is added to the board.

Zac Veen, the Colorado Rockies 2020 first-round draft pick, sends another ball to right field, and two more scored. To end the inning, shortstop Julio Carreras sends one over the fence. The Indians scored a total of six runs in the fifth inning.

But the Indians weren't done yet. Veen sends a ball over the left-center wall for his 11th home run of the year.

Spokane's pitching staff only allowed four hits the entire game. Those hits came from left-fielder Vaun Brown, catcher Patrick Bailey, designated-hitter Jairo Pomares, and second-baseman Simon Whiteman.

The Emeralds will look to bounce back tomorrow in the second game of the series. Left-handed pitcher Nick Swiney will take the mound for Eugene. The first pitch will be at 6:35 P.T, and the game will be available to watch on MiLB.TV.
