Dust Devils Outslugged by Indians

May 5, 2022 - Northwest League (NWL)
Tri-City Dust Devils News Release

Despite hitting their first grand slam of the season the Tri-City Dust Devils (11-11) lost their second straight game to the Spokane Indians (13-10) Wednesday night, falling 8-6 at Avista Stadium.

The back-and-forth contest was just that early. After falling behind 3-0 after two innings, Mike Peabody turned around a Tony Locey pitch with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning, sailing over the right-center field fence for a grand slam. The first grand slam of the year for Tri-City, and Peabody's third home run of 2022, gave the Dust Devils a 4-3 lead.

The Indians would respond with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third, though, with two Tri-City throwing errors helping to give Spokane a 7-4 lead and drive starter Jake Smith (0-3) out of the game.

The Dust Devils would respond immediately in the 4th inning, with Straton Podaras lining a home run over the left field fence, his third of the season, to get Tri-City within two at 7-5.

The Indians would score again in the 4th, though, matching the Dust Devils and stretching the lead again out to three at 8-5.

Tri-City would get back within two runs in the 8th inning. After loading the bases, Jose Guzman brought Steven Rivas home on a fielder's choice, making it an 8-6 game.

The Dust Devils would get no closer, though. Spokane closer Shelby Lackey would get a strikeout to end the inning, and a double play in the 9th to complete the save.

Tri-City and Spokane are set for game three of their six-game series at 6:35 p.m. Thursday night at Avista Stadium, with Landon Marceaux scheduled to start for the Dust Devils. Lefty Evan Shawver, countering for the Indians, is scheduled to make his High-A debut.

Dust Devils single game tickets are on sale now. Ticket packages are also available, and start at just $99. And special ticket rates are available for groups of 20 or more.
