
Durham rallies for 5-4 win over Gwinnett

The Lead: The Durham Bulls came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat the Gwinnett Braves 5-4 Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina. The Bulls score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it off of Gwinnett reliever Scott Proctor, and then push across the eventual winning run in the bottom of the eight. The win is the eight in a row for Durham, their first eight game winning streak since 2004. The Bulls still lead the International League South with a 13-and-3 mark. The loss drops the Braves to 6-and-10 and seven games in back of the Bulls in the division.
It Was Over When: Durham rightfielder Justin Ruggiano doubled the first pitch from reliever Cristhian Martinez to left with runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth. The hit scores Alvin Colina from third with the eventual winning run. Ruggiano, also, is a big part of the prior inning, when his two run homer off Proctor cuts the Braves lead to 4-3. The Bulls later in the inning tied the game when Chris Richard singled to right off Proctor scoring Hank Blalock from third.
Braves Beat: On the Mound: James Parr got the start for the Braves and got a no decision: His line: 5.0 IP, 7H, 1R/ER, 1BB, 5K'S. Michael Dunn worked a scoreless sixth inning: 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1K. Proctor (1-2) got the loss 2.0IP, 2H, 0R/ER, 0BB, 1K. Michael Dunn pitched the eighth: 1.2 IP, 7H, 4R/ER, 1BB, 1K. Martinez finishes out the game: 0.1 IP, 1H.
At the plate: The Braves banged out 12 hits. Mitch Jones went 2-for-3 with his first homer of the season - a solo shot in the 7th that gave the Braves a 4-1 lead. Matt Young, Barbaro Canizares, Brandon Hicks and J.C. Boscan each went 2-for-4.
Bulls Beat: On the Mound: Jeremy Hellickson started and got a no decision. His line: 3.2 IP, 9H, 3R/ER, 3BB, 1K. Brian Baker got the win in relief: 4.1 IP, 2H, 1R/ER, 0BB, 2K. Joaquin Benoit pitched the ninth for his second save: 1.0 IP, 1H, 0R/ER, 1K.
At the plate: Ruggiano went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Fernando Perez, 3-for-5. Elliott Johnson, Joe Dillon and Chris Richard each had two hits.
On Deck: The Braves and the Bulls play game two of the four-game series in Durham tomorrow night at 5:05 p.m. Braves RHP Chris Resop (0-1, 0.61 ERA) is scheduled to make his fourth start of the season. The Bulls will counter with LHP Heath Phillips (1-0, 2.25 ERA).
