Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

TAMPA, FL (July 6, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle may have found the ace of their staff on Thursday night at Legends Field as Brian Duensing continued an impressive string of starts and the Miracle offense continued to roll in a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Yankees.

Duensing, who has gone at least six innings in all six starts with the Miracle since being called up from Single-A Beloit, put together another terrific performance on Thursday. While his record was just 1-4 coming into the game he hadn't gotten much help from his offense or defense in his previous couple of outings, but that changed against the Yankees. The only blemish on the night for Duensing was the solo homer he gave up to Edwar Gonzalez, his eighth of the season, in the fifth inning. He also loaded the bases in the sixth with nobody out, but struck out the Florida State League RBI leader, Cody Ehlers, got Jared Greenwood to fly out to shallow center and struck out Gonzalez to end the inning. Duensing went 7.0 innings allowing one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out five.

The offense, which has now scored 33 runs in five games, recorded 12 hits on the evening and had 37 base knocks in the three games against the Yankees. The Miracle put up a four spot in the second. David Winfree reached on a throwing error by Yankee third baseman Mark Carroll. Back-to-back singles by Brock Peterson and Luke Hughes loaded the bases. Jeremy Pickrel followed with a walk to force in a run and give the Miracle a 1-0 lead. Erold Andrus then singled to right which scored Peterson. Hughes then barreled over Yankee catcher P.J. Pilittere and knocked the ball lose allowing himself to score and Pickrel from first to make it 4-0.

The Miracle made it 5-0 in the fourth when Alexi Casilla walked with two out, stole second and scored on Brandon Roberts single. Casilla would later single to extend his hitting streak to a Miracle season high 12 games.

In the fifth Peterson made it 6-1 with a solo homer to left, his 10th of the season, two shy of his total from last season with the Miracle. He finished the night 3-5 with a homer, RBI and two runs scored. The Miracle scored their final run in the eighth when Andrus and Casilla had back-to-back singles and, with two outs, Trevor Plouffe's grounder to third was thrown away by Carroll which allowed Andrus to score.

The Miracle now head to Ed Smith Stadium to take on the Sarasota Reds on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Jay Sawatski (1-0, 2.25) to the hill against Reds RHP Sam Lecure (3-8, 4.00).
