
Ducks power way to 6-2 win over Patriots

Bridgewater, NJ - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-2 before 5,580 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Sunday evening.
The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Elvis Pena doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Erick Almonte.
The Patriots tied up the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Kevin Nicholson reached on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by left fielder Larry Barnes.
Long Island regained the lead with a run in the top of the second inning on a solo home run by right fielder Juan Gonzalez (6) to make it 2-1.
Somerset answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by designated hitter Edgard Clemente (3) to tie up the game at 2-2.
The Ducks took the lead on a solo home run by Almonte (6) in the top of the sixth inning to give Long Island a 3-2 advantage.
Long Island extended the lead with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Third baseman Ray Navarette walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Greg Connors.
The Ducks added another two runs to their lead in the top of the ninth inning. Navarette and left fielder Bryan Goelz both singled and scored on a two-run double by catcher Brad King.
Ducks pitcher Tony Fiore (7-1) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on six hits, no walks, and four strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Patriots starter Sam McConnell (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out five and walking two in 6.1 innings pitched.
The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Tuesday, August 15th when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears.
