Bears come up short against Road Warriors

NEWARK, NJ - August 6, 2006 - The Newark Bears fell short to the Road Warriors 5-4 in the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Despite the loss, the Bears came back on two different occasions to tie the game. After Road Warriors shortstop Derek Barrows hit his third home run of the season to left field for a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, the Bears came right back in the bottom half of the inning when catcher Chris Torres scored from third base on an RBI groundout by left-fielder Jose Herrera to tie the game at 1. In the top of the fourth inning, Road Warriors first baseman Mike Huggins hit a two-run home run for his tenth of the season to put the Road Warriors ahead 3-1, however with two outs in the bottom of the fourth Bears center-fielder Anthony Sanders reached first base on a bunt down the third base line, and right-fielder Al Benjamin followed with a two-run home run to left field for his ninth of the season, which tied the game at 3.

The score remained the same until Road Warriors third baseman Nick Ortiz hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Road Warriors ahead for good. The Bears would cut the lead to 5-4 when Benjamin grounded into a fielder's choice scoring shortstop Liu Rodriguez in the bottom of the eighth.

For the Bears, Benjamin finished 2-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI, while third baseman Victor Rodriguez added two hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Ortiz led the Road Warriors offensively ending the day 2-for-4 with two RBI.

David Shepard (4-10) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings striking out six, while Matt Scheuing (5-6) earned the victory pitching 7 1/3 innings allowing four runs on eight hits striking out five.

The Bears begin a three-game home series against the Somerset Patriots beginning Tuesday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 am. Gates open at 10:05 am for Camp Day at The Den.
