Long Island Ducks News Release
(Bridgewater, N.J.) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-4 on Friday night in the second game of a four-game set at TD Bank Ballpark.
Long Island jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the third off Patriots starter Justin Cassel and one more in the fourth off reliever Derell McCall. Brandon Sing's two-run double, a run-scoring single by Ryan Garko and a solo home run off the bat of Lew Ford did the damage.
After a run by the Pats in the fourth off Ducks starter Dan Meyer cut the lead to three, Long Island responded with single runs in the sixth and eighth to extend their lead to 6-1 on a sac fly and a RBI fielder's choice from Dan Lyons. Jesse Hoorelbeke's two-run homer in the eighth and a RBI single by Rex Rundgren in the ninth closed the gap to two, but it wasn't enough for Somerset.
Meyer (1-0) picked up the win, tossing five innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four. Cassel (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Jon Meloan earned his first save despite allowing a run in the ninth, as he struck out Freddie Bynum and Freddy Sandoval with the tying runs in scoring position to end the game.
Garko paced the Flock with two hits at the plate, while Sing and Lyons each drove in a pair of runs.
