Staten Island FerryHawks News Release

LONG ISLAND, NY - One night after the FerryHawks scored the game's first six runs, the Ducks responded by doing the same en route to a 6-3 win Thursday night at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. Down 6-0, Staten Island clawed back with the game's last three runs, bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning.

Long Island jumped on Staten Island early, plating the first run in the first inning. Johnni Turbo started the game with a single, extending his hitting streak to 16 games, before stealing second. A single by Dustin Woodcock put runners on the corners with no outs for L.J. Mazzili. His hard-hit grounder to third was botched by Brandon Wagner, allowing Turbo to score for a 1-0 lead.

After working a scoreless second inning, FerryHawks starter Alex Vargas ran into some trouble in the third inning. Back-to-back singles by Mazzilli and Deibinson Romero, set the table for Sam Travis. The former Red Sox brought in his team-leading 22ndRBI with a sacrifice fly, giving the Ducks a 2-0 advantage.

Vargas (0-3) would work into the fourth inning before being replaced by right-hander Connor Law. He tossed 3.2 innings in his second start of the season, walking four without a strikeout.

Long Island thrived in the fourth inning for the second straight night, scoring four runs after a 10-run frame on Wednesday. Johnni Turbo collected an RBI single, before Dustin Woodcock doubled home a run to make it 4-0 Ducks. After an LJ Mazzilli sacfirice fly made it 5-0, Sam Travis singled home Woodcock to make it 6-0.

Kennedy (2-1) tossed seven strong innings, allowing just the one earned run. He issued no walks and struck out seven FerryHawks.

Staten Island rallied in the ninth inning, scoring two runs and bringing the tying run to the plate. Angel Aguilar kickstared the near-comeback with a one-out double. After Kelsie Whitmore replaced Aguilar as a pinch-runner, a Kacy Clemens groundout moved Whitmore to third. Down to their final out, the FerryHawks got their lone home run of the series from Rymer Liriano. His two-run blast cut the deficit to 6-3. Brandon Wagner and Norberto Susini each drew two-out walks to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Joseph Monge. Sandy Baez induced pop out of Monge to end the ninth-inning threat and give the Ducks the series sweep.

Staten Island (5-18) begin a three-game series on Friday night against the High Point Rockers. First pitch at Truist Point is slated for 6:35 with the FerryHawks Pregame Show starting at 6:20 on the SI FerryHawks YouTube page.
