Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - A night after the Mallards snapped their seven-game losing streak, they fell at home to the Wausau Woodchucks by a final score of 13-9 at Warner Park.
The Woodchucks got on the board early against Madison starter Dylan Wolff, who made his first start on Tuesday night. A couple of runners were put on board, including a four-pitch walk to begin the contest, and both runners came around to score on a groundout and a double from first baseman Nik Levenstiens. In the top of the 2nd, the Mallards were introduced to the power from Chase Hug. The Chucks' left fielder blasted the first of his three home runs in the game off Wolff to snatch an early 5-0 lead. The Ducks would respond with one run in the bottom half of the inning on an Adrian Mella single, scoring Scott Shaw (2-5, 2B). Madison sent two more runners across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd on a Chad McCann single and a wild pitch. Wausau's starting pitcher Ben Abernathy (6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 K) put together a solid start after batting in the leadoff spot on Monday afternoon in Wausau. An inning after Hug (5-6, 3 HR, 6 RBI) mashed his second home run, the redshirt junior from Evansville hit his third in the top of the 5th off Justin Miller (0.0 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 ER).
Madison would not go away after Hug's third bomb of the night. The home team combined for six runs over the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings to bring the game within three heading to the final frame. The Mallards scored three runs after the stretch after a hit-by-pitch, a single, and a walk all came around to score on the second Woodchucks' error of the game and a wild pitch. Madison was given three runs from three Wausau wild pitches. With trouble brewing in the 8th, Carter Heninger entered and slammed the door on the Mallards. A strikeout of Josh Caron ended the threat and Heninger went on to sit down all five batters he would face.
The league-wide doubleheader is tomorrow and the Mallards square off with the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders from Herr-Baker Field in Fond du Lac. Game one begins at 11:35 AM and game two is scheduled to start at 6:35 PM. Game coverage can be found on the Northwoods League website.
