Ducks beat Newark 4-1, take rubber game

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 15, 2003) – The Long Island Ducks defeated Newark 4-1 before an announced crowd of 5,814 at Citibank Park tonight, taking two of the three games in the series with the Bears. The win gave the Ducks six wins in their past seven games and sole possession of first place in the North Division, as Nashua lost to Camden 3-2 in 11 innings.

Ducks starter Bryan Rekar (2-0) allowed three hits, one run (unearned) and struck out two to pick up the win. Rekar threw an economic 83 pitches in his seven-inning stint. Relievers Pedro Borbon (scoreless eighth inning) and Oscar Henriquez (scoreless ninth, fourth save) came on to close the game. The Ducks improved to 9-0 when leading after seven innings. Rekar, Borbon and Henriquez have not allowed an earned run this season in a combined 31 2/3 innings pitched. Bears starter Al Hawkins (0-2) took the loss after allowing three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Long Island plated three runs in the third when, with the bases loaded, Doug Jennings was hit by a pitch, followed by back-to-back walks of Patrick Lennon and Derrick Gibson. The Ducks added an insurance run in the eighth inning on OF Kimera Bartee's first home run of the season. Newark outfielder/designated hitter Rickey Henderson was limited to a 2-for-11 showing during the series.

Tomorrow night the Ducks travel to Somerset to take on the Patriots. RHP Denny Harriger (1-1, 3.27 ERA) gets the start for Long Island and will be opposed by fellow right-hander Jason Dickson (1-1, 4.76 ERA) for Somerset. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. in a game that will be carried live by Island Talk 540 (WLIE-AM). Chris King will describe the action live from Somerset. Duck Tales: Ducks OF Kimera Bartee hit his first HR in a Ducks uniform in the eighth inning, completing a 2-for-4 evening... Kevin Baez extended his hitting streak to 7 games and has now reached base in all 13 contests...Pedro Borbon has yet to allow a run in his league-leading eight appearances, totaling eight and two-thirds innings pitched...Tonight's crowd of 5,814 placed the Ducks league-leading average attendance at 5,907 through seven home games. A grand total of 1,358,063 fans have now enjoyed Ducks baseball at Citibank Park since April of 2000.
