Dubuque Moves to 5-0 with 5-4 Shootout Win

October 18, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

A wild night in Des Moines culminated with a thrilling 5-4 win for Dubuque as Riese Gaber scored the only goal in the shootout to lead the Fighting Saints to a 5-0 start to the season. Ty and Dylan Jackson both had three points each, Aidan Fulp and Stephen Halliday each scored a power play goal and the Erik Portillo picked up his fourth win of the season.

-In Dubuque's first game that extended past regulation, the Saints found a way to win. Overtime was particularly wild as the Saints started shorthanded for a minute fifty. Des Moines then killed off the final minute shorthanded after the Saints made a late power play push.

-Dubuque was up and down in the game but continued their winning streak with timely power play scoring. Just like their win against Tri-City, a late power play goal from the Saints in the third period tied things up. Aidan Fulp scored his first goal of the season with just under eight to play to tie the game at four.

-Dubuque suffocated Des Moines in the first period, dominating the zone time and time of possession to the tune of a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. It was arguably the best period of hockey Dubuque has played this season.

-Des Moines came back with a flurry as they scored three goals in the second to even the scoring. Dubuque was able to get one and keep the score even, but the Buccaneers carried momentum in to the third.

-That momentum carried in to the third as they took a brief lead. Dubuque took two late penalties that could have cost them after equalizing, but the penalty kills came up big when needed.

-The power play has been dynamic all season long and it scored another two goals tonight for Dubuque. Halliday scored the first goal and Fulp scored the second.

-Dubuque kept the top scorer in the league at bay almost all night. Alex Lafferiere had his four-game point streak snapped as Dubuque held him off the board. Despite Des Moines four goals, they weren't able to get their top threat going.

-Dubuque moved to 5-0 to start a season for the third time since 2010. Dubuque is the only team to start a season 5-0 or better more than once since that year. The Saints started 2013-14 7-0 and 2012-13 9-0.

-Next up for Dubuque will be Sioux City as they travel to face the Musketeers Friday night. Sioux City is coming off an 8-2 win over the Tri-City Storm.
