
Dube Named CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman

LAREDO, Texas - The Central Hockey League announced today that Laredo Bucks defenseman Serge Dube has been named the 2005-06 CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman. Dube, who was named to the All-CHL Team on Monday, has helped lead the Bucks to the top mark in the Southern Conference. The Bucks are home Sunday against the Corpus Christi Rayz to close the 2005-06 CHL regular season. Dube, a native of Sudbury, Ontario, started for the Southern Conference in the All-Star Game this year. He leads all Bucks defenseman with 52 points and is fourth overall on the team in points. He is fifth among all CHL defenseman in total points and second with a +35 plus/minus rating. He also leads all Bucks defenseman with 39 assists and is second among Laredo defenseman with 13 goals. He has been called up twice this season to San Antonio in the American Hockey League.
"Serge has been contributing to our success for the past four years," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "He is a very important part of our success. Serge is a leader and is well deserving of this award. I am very proud of his efforts and accomplishments."
On November 11, 2005 he tied Bucks franchise records by posting a plus six rating and recording five assists in a win over Memphis. He was selected as the Sherwood CHL Player of the Month for November as he scored seven goals and had 21 points helping the Bucks to an 11-1-1 mark during the month. On January 20, 2006 against Colorado he recorded his first career hat trick.
The fourth year pro's steady play has helped the Bucks post a 41-15-6 record and clinch the top seed in the Southern Conference playoffs. Laredo in number one in the CHL in goals allowed per game at 2.47.
"I was shocked when I found out about the award," Dube said. "They are so many good defenseman on our team and in the league so it is pretty overwhelming to be named the CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman. To be selected as an All-Star starter this year was an honor, but this is tough to even put into words. It definitely helps when the forwards come back and help out regularly and the goalies behind you are number one and two in the league in goals allowed."
Dube is an original Buck dating back to the first year of the franchise in 2002-03 and is the Bucks' all-time leader in games played with 205.
He began last year oversees in England with the Bracknell Bees however he returned to the Gateway City in November of 2004. Injuries last year limited him to 32 games with the Bucks where he totaled four goals and 12 assists. Despite struggling with injuries for the first time in his career he made a major impact on the ice. When he returned from an extended stint on the IR on February 23, 2005, the Bucks were 23-22-2. Despite suffering a severely broken nose in just his third game back he continued playing. With Dube in the lineup down the stretch the team finished 12-0-1 and captured both the Southeast Division title and the top seed in the Southern Conference playoffs. In the playoffs Dube, a native of Sudbury, Ontario, added a goal and seven assists as he helped the Bucks reach the President's Cup Finals for the second straight season.
Dube had a spectacular 2003-04 season scoring a career high 18 goals and adding 50 assists in 59 regular season game and was selected to the Southern Conference All-Star team. The Bucks went 48-8-8, posting the best winning percentage in CHL history at .814 %. In the playoffs he had a goal and 10 assists as the Bucks captured the 2004 President's Cup.
In 2002-03 he played in all 64 regular season games and had 10 goals and 36 assists as he helped the expansion Bucks win 41 games. In the post-season he had two goals and four assists as the Bucks reached the Southern Conference Finals.
In four years with the Bucks he is plus 116 overall.
This is the second Most Outstanding Defenseman Award for the Bucks franchise. Michel Periard captured the honor during the 2002-03 season.
The Laredo Bucks have had a big week with year end CHL awards. On Tuesday Owner / Governor Glenn Hart was named the recipient of the Rick Kozuback Award. Wednesday Bobby Moore was named the 2005-06 CHL Athletic Trainer of the Year. Also on Wednesday Terry Ruskowki was selected as the 2005-06 CHL Coach of the Year.
