Waterloo, Iowa - For the sixth consecutive year, a current or former Waterloo Black Hawk has been selected within the first three rounds of the NHL Draft, as the Carolina Hurricanes claimed Jack Drury with the 42nd overall pick on Saturday.
The Black Hawks' 2017/18 captain heard his name called during the second round at American Airlines Center in Dallas, the site of this year's draft. Since 2013, now 11 Waterloo alumni have been chosen just within the first three rounds, with a total of 19 picks in the annual seven round event. Another five players have been drafted before joining the Hawks during that span.
"There are few players as dedicated to hard work on a daily basis as Jack Drury," said Waterloo Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "It was great to see him consistently rewarded for that effort in 2017/18, and great to see him grow into the type of leader who brings out the best in his teammates."
Drury ranked fourth in United States Hockey League scoring last winter, accumulating 65 points (24 goals, 41 assists) in 56 regular season games. He captured the attention of the entire league when he recorded a point in 23 consecutive games between November 22nd and February 16th. In that time, Drury notched 14 of his goals and 18 assists. A threat to score every time he was on the ice, the Harvard recruit led the league with 34 power play points (12 goals, 22 assists) and five shorthanded goals.
Since last summer, Drury has twice represented the United States in international competition. In August 2017, he led the U.S. delegation in scoring during the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup Tournament in Czech Republic. Then in December, he returned from the World Junior A Challenge in Canada with a silver medal. Later this summer, he will be one of 42 U.S. players participating in the 2018 World Junior Summer Showcase and under consideration for the 2019 U.S. National Junior Team.
During the 2015 NHL Draft, the Hurricanes chose forward David Cotton, who appeared for Waterloo the following winter and is currently skating for Boston College. Carolina's other connection to the Black Hawks is through defenseman Andrew Alberts, who spent much of the 2009/10 season with the team as part of his nine-year career in the league.
