Jets Have Draft Moe-Ment

Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - A solid first season with the Waterloo Black Hawks had already helped Jared Moe earn a scholarship from the University of Minnesota, and Saturday it led to his selection by the Winnipeg Jets during the 2018 NHL Draft in Dallas.

Waterloo has had several goalies in recent seasons who had been drafted prior to their arrival in the Cedar Valley, but this is the first time a Hawks netminder has been picked after appearing for the team since 2013. That year, Eamon McAdam, Stephon Williams, and Cal Petersen were all selected.

"Jared had a shutout in his first game for us back in October," noted Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "It was a good beginning, but most importantly, it was a chance for him to feel good and a chance for his teammates to feel good about having him behind them."

That 30-save performance versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints was the first of two shutouts during 2017/18, as well as the first of 23 wins. Throughout the year, Moe's goals-against average (2.23, fourth) and save percentage (91.9%, seventh) ranked among the best goalies in the United States Hockey League. Compared only against the USHL's American netminders, Moe ranked third and fourth in those categories respectively.

Last summer, Dylan Samberg became the first Waterloo player to be drafted by the Jets organization since they moved to Winnipeg. When the club was known as the Atlanta Thrashers, they chose Black Hawks forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas during the 2009 draft.

Moe intends to return to Waterloo for his second USHL season this fall. He is scheduled to join the Gophers after enrolling at the University of Minnesota during the fall of 2019.
