Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, were topped by the Greenville Drive, 8-3, before 1,881 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night.
Hickory RHP Cody Buckel limited the Drive to just one run in his five-inning start, winding up with the no-decision. Greenville (75-61, 37-29) struck against Buckel with a solo homer by 1B Drew Hedman in the third, but the 'Dads starter responded with two scoreless innings and by striking out the side in the fifth to close his outing.
The Crawdads (78-55, 38-27) evened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning against RHP Brandon Workman (W, 6-7). DH Tomas Telis started the inning by getting on when he struck out on a wild pitch and managed to race to first before C Christian Vasquez could fire it down there. 3B Christian Villanueva then advanced Telis to second base with a single. Telis then moved to third on a double steal, although Villanueva was thrown out at second base. RF Josh Richmond brought Telis in the final ninety feet with an RBI single, squaring the score at 1-1.
Greenville moved back in front in the top of the sixth against RHP Jorge Marban (L, 1-6). With one away, Vasquez lifted the Drive in front with a solo home run, making it 2-1. One out later, RF Henry Ramos and 3B Michael Almanzar knocked consecutive singles, before a wild pitch plated Ramos for the 3-1 Drive advantage.
Hickory drew within one run of tying the game again in the bottom of the sixth. SS Jurickson Profar led off with a double, before stealing his way to third base. One out later, Telis brought in Profar with an RBI ground out to first base, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
The Drive, though, stretched the lead again in the top of the seventh inning. With two on and one away, LF Brandon Jacobs hit a three-run home run, putting Greenville ahead, 6-2.
After Telis drove in another run with an RBI grounder in the bottom of the eighth to bring the 'Dads within three runs, Greenville plated two more in the top of the ninth. The Drive worked the bases loaded with walks against RHP Matt Thompson, and SS Xander Bogaerts struck with a two-run single off of RHP Ben Rowen to account for the 8-3 final score in the Greenville victory.
