Drive Drop Game One of Doubleheader, 9-2; Game Two Suspended

Greenville, S.C. - The Drive lost game one of Sunday's planned doubleheader to Asheville, 9-2, while game two wasn't completed due to heavy rain in the Asheville area.

The second game will be made up in Greenville later this year when the Tourists visit Fluor Field for a six-game series beginning August 31 through September 5. Plans for the completion of Sunday's suspended game will be released at a later date.

Game 1

Asheville used three homers to power past Greenville, 9-2 in game one.

Starter Chase Shugart took the loss after surrendering seven runs on seven hits, one walk and two homers over 4.1 innings. He fanned six.

RJ Freure earned the win. He tossed 5.0 innings and relented just two runs on two hits, one homer and one walk with six strikeouts.

The Drive managed just three hits and one walk. Brandon Howlett registered the only RBI of the game on a two-run homer in the first inning. Tyler Esplin and Dom D'Alessandro each had one hit.

Greenville quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, Dearden drew a walk. Howlett followed that with a two-run homer, his 11th of the year.

Asheville got a run back in the bottom half of the frame on a Matt Barefoot solo shot.

In the third inning, the Tourists plated four runs on a two-run double by Cesar Salazar and two-run homer by Barefoot, his second clout of the game. They led, 5-2.

Asheville put the game away in the fifth inning on three-run homer by Shay Whitcomb to take an 8-2 advantage.

One more run came across for the Tourists in the sixth inning on a Salazar RBI single.

Game 2

Due to weather, game two was suspended in the second inning with Asheville holding on to a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning prior to the suspension and rain, the Tourists plated three runs. Alex Holderbach homered to lead off the frame while Bryan Arias and Barefoot both connected on RBI doubles.

The game will resume with a runner on second base and two outs.

After an off-day Monday, the Drive return to Fluor Field to begin a six-game homestand against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh, Tuesday at 7:05.
