May 30, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
One night after posting a shutout against the San Antonio Missions, the Tulsa Drillers nearly had the tables turned on them Tuesday night. Only a ninth inning run kept the Drillers from being blanked as they fell to the Missions 4-1. The loss ended a 6-game winning streak and dropped Tulsa one game behind Springfield in the North Division standings. The Cardinals were 7-5 winners in Midland.
After being held scoreless for eight innings on Tuesday, the Drillers nearly staged a 2-out rally. After Seth Smith singled to begin the ninth, San Antonio reliever Eric O'Flaherty retired Joe Gaetti and Joe Koshansky on strikes to bring the Drillers within one out of a loss. But Alvin Colina singled, and Jordan Czarniecki walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Missions' closer Jon Huber replaced O'Flaherty and surrendered a single to Matt Macri that brought Smith home with Tulsa's first run of the game. With the bases loaded and the tying run now at first base, Huber retired Christian Colonel on a fly ball to left to end the the game.
The Missions had built their 4-0 lead with a pair of 2-run innings. In the bottom of the third, Tulsa starting pitcher Enmanuel Ulloa balked in the game's first run, and San Antonio first baseman Bryan LaHair singled home the second run.
San Antonio doubled its lead in the fifth on only one hit, as a pair of walks from Ulloa helped the Misions. Jesus Guzman drove home one run with a ground out, and LaHair produced his second RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Ulloa (3-2) was charged with the loss for the Drillers. In seven innings, he surrendered six hits and four earned runs. He walked three and struck out five. Alberto Arias worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning in relief.
Missions starter Adam Pettyjohn (1-2) picked up his first win of the season with six shutout innings. He allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out six. Huber recorded his 10th save.
The Drillers lost despite out-hitting San Antonio 10-6. Macri led Tulsa with three hits, while Smith, Colina and Colonel had two hits each. The two teams will play game three of their four-game series Wednesday night at 7:05PM. Steven Register (1-2, 5.40 ERA) will make the start for Tulsa against Travis Blackley (4-3, 4.15 ERA) of the Missions.
