Tulsa Drillers News Release

August 4, 2008 - Two different times, the Tulsa Drillers appeared to have Monday night's game with the Springfield Cardinals won, but twice they squandered leads. The result was 6-5 loss to the Cards in 13 innings.

After blowing a three-run lead in the eighth inning, the Drillers seemed positioned to still post a win when Neil Wilson homered in the top of the 13th to give Tulsa a 5-4 lead. It was Wilson's fourth hit of the game.

The lead quickly disappeared in the bottom of the 13th. With one out, Andrew Brown reached on an error by shortstop Eduardo Cornejo. The miscue seemed to unnerve Drillers' closer Ryan Mattheus who uncorked a wild pitch before walking Daryl Jones. Matt Pagnozzi abruptly ended the game with a double inside the third base bag that brought Brown home with the tying run and Jones with the winning run.

It was the second comeback in the game for the Redbirds. The Drillers appeared to be on their way to a victory after a three-run eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie. With one out, the Drillers got three straight singles from Jeff Kindel, Jeff Dragicevich and Daniel Carte to take a one-run lead.

Wilson added to the hit parade with another single, but Dragicevich was thrown out at the plate by center fielder James Rapoport to keep the score at 2-1. Cornejo then brought Carte home with another base hit. Tony Blanco made it six straight singles with a hit to right field that brought Wilson home to make it 4-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Darren Clarke retired the first two hitters and had two strikes on Rapoport before he singled. Jose Martinez followed with a double. The inning-extending hit proved huge when Allen Craig hit his 20th home run of the season over the Tulsa bullpen in left field to tie the game at 4-4.

The rally by the Cards spoiled a strong outing from starting pitcher Brandon Hynick. The right-hander pitched the first seven innings, allowing only the one run on three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

Tulsa will have a day off on Tuesday before beginning a six-game homestand at Drillers Stadium Wednesday night against Frisco. Keith Weiser, who was 7-10 with a 3.05 ERA at Class A Modesto, will make his Double A debut for the Drillers with first pitch scheduled for 7:05PM.
