Dragons Win Again, Continue Hottest Streak of 2010

Lansing, Mich.-Henry Rodriguez collected three hits and scored two runs to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 7-6 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday night. The Dragons have won three straight games and seven of their last eight.

Dragons starting pitcher Clayton Shunick shook off a rough start to earn his third straight victory. Shunick allowed five runs before he recorded the first out of the first inning, but settled down over the next five frames. He worked the first six innings, allowing six hits and six earned runs with four walks and one strikeout to improve to 3-1.

The Dragons bullpen was outstanding again. Relievers Daniel Renken and Blaine Howell combined for three innings of scoreless baseball without allowing a hit. Howell pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

The Dragons scored twice in the top of the first inning, getting an RBI single from Rodriguez to start the scoring. Rodriguez then scored from second base on a sacrifice fly to deep center field off the bat of Frank Pfister to make it 2-0.

Lansing scored five in the bottom of the first, keyed by a three-run double by Brad Glenn and a two-run home run by Kevin Ahrens.

The Dragons sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring five runs. Mark Fleury's two-run triple was the key hit in the inning. Kevyn Feiner and Justin Reed each had two-out, RBI singles to give Dayton a 7-5 lead.

Lansing scored one run against Shunick in the third to make it 7-6, but they did not push a runner past first base after the third inning.

The Dragons collected 12 hits after tallying 16 on Friday night in South Bend. Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games by going 3 for 4. Reed, Feiner, and Tommy Nurre each had two hits.

The Dragons (19-41, 49-80) play the Lugnuts again Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Tim Crabbe (3-6, 4.18) will start for Dayton against Dave Sever (6-9, 4.47). The next home game is Wednesday vs. Bowling Green at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
