Chiefs Open Crucial Series With 7-1 Win Over Clinton

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs took the lead early on Saturday and never looked back, defeating the Clinton LumberKings 7-1. The win improves the Chiefs to 29-29 on the second half of the season and 67-60 overall as they make a final playoff push. With 10 games left the Chiefs are four games behind Clinton and three games out of the wild card. The Chiefs opened the scoring in the second off starter Nick Czyz. With two outs Luis Flores reached on a fielding error by Nick Franklin at shortstop and came around to score on an Anthony Giansanti double. George Matheus walked before Hak-Ju Lee singled to score Giansanti and put runners on first and second. Logan Watkins reached on another fielding error by Franklin to load the bases and DJ Fitzgerald tripled to clear the bases and make it a 5-0 Chiefs lead. The LumberKings got one back in the fourth off reliever Austin Kirk. Mickey Wiswall reached safely on a strike-three wild pitch and came all the way around to score on a Vince Catricala double to right center, cutting the Chiefs lead to 5-1. The Chiefs answered in the bottom of the fourth to push their advantage back to five runs. Lee doubled and advanced to third on a Watkins groundout to second base. Fitzgerald doubled for his third extra-base hit of the game, pushing the lead to 6-1. The Chiefs added another run in the bottom of the fifth, still facing Czyz. Ja-Hoon Ha doubled and advanced to third on a Giansanti single. Matheus hit a line drive to right that was caught for a sacrifice fly to score Ha and make it 7-1. Marcus Hatley went two and 1/3 innings and did not allow a run on one hit while walking two and striking out five. Kirk (1-1) pitched five and 2/3 innings and gave up one run on one hit while walking one and striking out four. Manolin DeLeon threw the final inning and did not allow a run while hitting one batter for the only base runner of the inning.
