South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Eastlake, OH - After going 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position in a loss at home against the Dayton Dragons on Friday, the South Bend Silver Hawks apparently have not solved the problem on the bus trip to Ohio. South Bend went 1-for-9 with RISP on Saturday, falling to the Lake County Captains 2-1 in the series opener at Classic Park.
The Silver Hawks had an immediate threat against Lake County starter Vidal Nuno (WP, 6-7) when Keon Broxton doubled to start the game. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third, but a groundout and strikeout left in there as the Hawks went scoreless in the first.
Lake County on the other hand chased South Bend starter Andrew Wolcott (LP, 2-4) from the game in the first inning. A one out double by Tyler Holt started the rally, and he scored on Casey Frawley's infield hit that was followed up with a throwing error by Victor Estevez to make it 1-0. Wolcott then walked two batters before getting a strikeout, but had to come out of the game after 0.2 innings because he reached 40 pitches in a single frame.
The South Bend bullpen was sensational as Rafael Quezada, Chris Odegaard, and Bradin Hagens combined for 7.1 innings of one run relief. The lone run was a two out rally against Quezada in the fifth, with Delvi Cid's RBI triple scoring Argenis Martinez from first base.
The Silver Hawks didn't threaten again until the fifth when Ramon Castillo led off with a double, pushing his hitting streak to 10 games. Castillo got to third on a two-out single by Victor Estevez, but was stranded there as the team went 1-for-4 with RISP in the inning.
A two out double by Ender Inciarte was stranded at second base in the seventh, before the Silver Hawks finally broke through with a run in the eighth. Estevez led off the inning by lining a home run over the left field fence, cutting into the Lake County lead at 2-1.
The homer chased Nuno from the game, but Takafumi Nakamura (SV, 1) came in and got out of the eighth inning. Bobby Borchering's leadoff single in the ninth was ultimately stranded at second with the Hawks going 0-for-2 with RISP in their final at-bat.
Game two of the four game road series takes place at 1:00 PM Eastern Time on Sunday from Classic Park in Ohio. LHP Tyler Skaggs (8-4, 3.57 ERA) toes the rubber for South Bend against Lake County's RHP Brett Brach (4-8, 3.55 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 12:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
