LANSING, Mich. - The Dayton Dragons (17-20, 53-52) scored five unanswered runs in the eighth and ninth innings to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (18-19, 50-56), 7-6, on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The loss marks the fourth time this season that the Lugnuts have surrendered a five-run lead.
After a three-run home run by Tanner Rahier in the eighth brought Dayton within one run, the Dragons plated a pair of runs in the ninth without registering a single base hit against reliever Scott Silverstein (Blown Save, 7)(Loss, 10-4).
Silverstein issued four walks and hit one batter in the ninth. Gabriel Rosa scored the game-tying run on a passed ball charged to catcher Daniel Klein, and the go-ahead run was scored by Robert Ramirez on a wild pitch.
Reliever Joel Bender (Win, 5-2) pitched a scoreless eighth for Dayton, with Alejandro Chacin (Save, 13) working a perfect ninth.
After a solo home run by Alex Blandino in his first Midwest League at-bat gave Dayton the lead in the first inning, the Lugnuts worked five walks in the bottom of the inning against starting pitcher Dan Langfield.
An RBI single by Jason Leblebijian tied the game at 1-1, and back-to-back walks to David Harris and Dickie Joe Thon plated two more runs. A groundout by Justin Atkinson plated one more run to cap the four-run frame for the Lugnuts. Langfield left the game after recording just one out in the first.
After an RBI single by Matt Dean in the fourth, Chaz Frank reached on an error by Blandino in the fifth to give the Lugnuts a 6-2 lead.
The Lugnuts hit just 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position, stranding 11 base runners in the game.
