Burlington Bees News Release
(Cedar Rapid-IA) Kernels' starting pitcher Lewis Thorpe, struck out 11 Bees' hitters, helping the Cedar Rapids Kernels defeat the Burlington Bees, 6-2, on Tuesday night.
Angel Rosa started the game with boom, launching a one out solo homer over the left field wall, putting the Bees on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
Cedar Rapids got the bats going in the fourth inning, taking the lead thanks to a Michael Quesada two run single, making 2-1 in favor of the Kernels.
The Kernels added to their lead in the fifth inning when Ryan Walker scored on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Mitch Garver, whom later came around to score on a Ryan Haar double, upping the lead to 4-1.
With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Angel Rosa drew a walk, Mike Fish then doubled into the right field corner, cutting the deficit to 4-2, and chasing Lewis Thorpe from the game.
The Kernels' bullpen however picked up where Thorpe left off, throwing three scoreless innings.
Cedar Rapids added two more runs in the eighth, on their way to a 6-2 win in game one of a three game series.
Kernels' starter Lewis Thorpe (2-2) earned the win while Daniel Hurtado (1-1) was charged with the loss. Jake Reed (1) pitched two innings to record the save.
