Dayton Dragons News Release
LOS ANGELES (September 27, 2005) -- Mandalay Baseball Properties, owners of the Dayton Dragons, have announced that Robert Murphy, the president of the team since its inception, has been named Minor League Baseball Executive of the Year by the longstanding national sports publication The Sporting News. Murphy's honor, one of the industry's highest, will be featured in this weeks edition of the publication along with the Minor League Player of the Year and Manager of the Year awards.
One of the key factors considered in Murphy's recognition is the Dragons sellout streak, which began on its first opening day and continued through the 2005 season. The streak is the longest active string of full houses in professional baseball and the second longest in all of professional sports.
"We have always recognized Bob's leadership, passion and ability as a key factor in the success of the Dragons," said Mandalay Baseball Properties Team Division President Jon Spoelstra. "He leads our exceptional staff and has become an important member of the community that has made us a success, and we're thrilled that The Sporting News has joined Mandalay in knowing that Bob is one of the very best in the business.
Murphy, who held executive positions in both baseball and hockey prior to taking the reigns of the Dragons, was typically humble in his response to the honor.
""This is obviously a great honor, but the recognition is certainly not mine alone," said Murphy. "This award is a reflection on our tremendous staff, the Dayton community leaders who have continued to be passionate about and supportive of the Dragons, our great fans, as well as the ownership and executive team at Mandalay Baseball Properties, who provide every tool and tactic we need to ensure our fans have an exceptional experience each and every night we open the gates."
