July 11, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Dayton Dragons News Release

DAYTON, OHIO - Dayton Dragons infielder Elly De La Cruz has been named the Midwest League Batter of the Week for the week of July 4-10.

For the week, De La Cruz batted .421 with five home runs and three stolen bases. Twice within a three-day period (July 9 and July 11), De La Cruz hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game. No other Dayton player had done it once since Henry Rodriguez on April 12, 2010.

De La Cruz has become just the third player in Dragons history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season, joining Wily Mo Pena (2001) and Jose Siri (2017). De La Cruz did it in his first 71 games of the 2022 season.

De La Cruz, 20, is the seventh youngest player in the Midwest League with at least 120 at-bats. For the year, he is batting .303 with 20 home runs, 52 runs batted in, a slugging percentage of .610 and an OPS of .971. He leads the MWL in home runs, OPS, and slugging percentage while ranking in the top three in RBI, batting average, hits, runs, and extra base hits. He is fourth in stolen bases.

De La Cruz, a native of the Dominican Republic, was signed by the Reds as an international free agent on July 2, 2018.

The Dragons open a six-game road series in Eastlake, Ohio against the Lake County Captains on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m.

The Dragons return home to Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District to open a three-game series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Friday, July 22 at 7:05 p.m. For ticket information, go daytondragons.com/tickets or call (937) 228-2287.
