South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN - Knowing that they needed a Sunday afternoon victory to get back to a tie for first place, as well as a six-game series split, the South Bend Cubs went into battle on Sunday against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers after dropping back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. They set the pace early, and shutdown Wisconsin bats by only allowing one hit. The matinee ending with a 6-2 Cubs victory.
Facing right-hander Justin Jarvis on the mound, South Bend had their hands full in order to pull off a finale victory. Jarvis pitched seven innings and struck out 11 batters on Monday. Although he finished strong, the Cubs got to Jarvis in the first inning as Pete Crow-Armstrong took him deep on the first pitch he saw from the righty. Three batters later, Jake Washer also crushed a drive over the left field wall for another solo shot.
On the mound for the Cubs, Daniel Palencia took the hill for the first time since Monday as well. He pitched after the rehabbing Drew Smyly on the Fourth of July. Smyly, who was in South Bend earlier in this series, was pitching for the Chicago Cubs today at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Palencia allowed six runs in 2.2 innings on Monday. Sunday was much different, as he got his retribution. Palencia was dynamic with an upper-90s fastball and a vanishing changeup, which also mixed with a nasty slider. He worked four complete innings, allowed one hit, and struck out seven. The lone knock that he surrendered was a two-run homer for Joe Gray Jr.
After their two round-trippers in the 1st inning, the Cubs had two more frames were their plated a pair. In the bottom of the 4th, Yohendrick Pinango picked up an RBI double, and Jonathan Sierra drove in Jordan Nwogu on an RBI sacrifice fly. For Sierra, he had two more hits after a three-knock game earlier this series.
Lastly in the 7th, PCA sprinted home on a fielder's choice grounder smacked by Pinango, and Washer picked up another RBI plating Nwogu.
Out of the bullpen, the Cubs used four relief pitchers to get the victory. Lefty Riley Martin was activated off the Development List before the game, and in his return he fired two shutout innings and earned the win.
In the last three innings, Michael McAvene, Zac Leigh, and Eduarniel Nunez all posted zeros. With the victory, South Bend is tied for first in the division along with Wisconsin again with second half records of 11-4.
Next up, the Cubs will head to Peoria, Illinois on Tuesday to square off with the Chiefs. On the season, South Bend has not had more success versus a Midwest League team than Peoria. They are 11-1 against them this season.
