Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Vectren Corporation and the Dayton Dragons will host West Carrollton firefighters Andy Shepherd (Capt.), Josh Astor, Brandon Abney, Dave Howard, Ben Lindon, and Josh Whitehead during the unique "Community All-Stars" program on Monday, July 9th, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Great Lakes Loons at Fifth Third Field.
The Dayton Dragons "Community All-Stars" program recognizes unsung community members for their good deeds and efforts. This season the Dragons and Vectren will honor individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley. Throughout the season, 35 "All-Stars"-anyone from firefighters to first responders, non-profit organizations to Good Samaritans-and their families will receive VIP treatment at a Dragons game in recognition of their service.
THE WEST CARROLLTON FIREFIGHTERS' STORY
Although it is in their job description, it is not every day that firefighters have to rush into a burning building to save lives. On February 17, several members of the West Carrollton Fire Department had to do just that.
Around 2 a.m., Robin Callahan and her son Daniel Evans woke up surrounded by smoke and flames. By the time fire crews arrived, the first floor was engulfed by fire. Crews were forced to go up an interior staircase in temperatures as high as 1,300 degrees.
Crews found Robin on the second floor and Daniel on the first floor under a table. Both were hospitalized with severe burns on their body, but survived because of the efforts of the fire crew at the scene.
Members of the West Carrollton Fire Department involved in the rescue were honored by the city with merit awards and many thanks from family members of the individuals they saved.
For their brave act, members of the West Carrollton Fire Department have been selected as Dragons Community All-Stars. During an inning break, a tribute video will be played on the videoboard, and the trio will be presented with a plaque.
The Dragons Community All-Stars Program is made possible by the generous support of Vectren. For more information on the program or to read about the All-Stars we have honored so far, visit daytondragons.com.
