Whitecaps Can't Beat The Heat In Series Loss

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The only thing hotter than the weather on Friday night were the Lake County Captains' bats.

On a day in which a high temperature of 104 degrees marked the hottest day in Grand Rapids since 1936 - and the third-hottest day in the city's history - the West Michigan Whitecaps were knocked around for 18 hits in a 9-2 loss to the Lake County Captains at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (8-7, 44-41) lost two out of three games in the series as a result. Although the Whitecaps have won eight of their last 11 series' since May 30, two of those series losses have come against Lake County (8-7, 39-45) over the last nine days.

The Captains took the lead during the first at-bat of the game and never let up, counting three solo home runs and 14 singles among an 18-hit barrage that equaled the most hits allowed by the Whitecaps' pitching staff this season. Leonardo Castillo led the way with a 4-for-5 evening while Jordan Smith added a 3-for-6 effort and four other Lake County hitters chipped in with two-hit games.

Leadoff man Jose Ramirez set the tone by drilling a solo homer off Whitecaps' starter Jeff Ferrell during the first at-bat of the evening. Smith led off the third with another solo bomb as the Captains took a 4-1 lead after three frames.

Lake County tallied an unearned run in the fourth before blowing the game open with a two-out, two-run single by Zach MacPhee in the fifth inning and their third solo homer of the night from Alex Lavisky in the sixth.

Meanwhile, West Michigan managed just five hits.

Jeff McVaney went 2-for-4 with a double and a run while Edgar Corcino provided one of the lone highlights with a long home run to dead-center field in the fifth.

Shawn Morimando (3-2) gave up two runs over five innings to earn the win for Lake County, while Ferrell (2-3) was knocked around for four runs on seven hits and a pair of homers in 2.2 innings for the loss.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Ballpark with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch on Saturday night against the Lansing Lugnuts. RHP Wilsen Palacios (9-5, 3.24) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP David Rollins (5-1, 2.97) of Lansing. The ballgame will be packed with promotions including a mini-bat giveaway for the first 1,000 fans, post-game fireworks, and a host of characters from the 501st Legion raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation on Star Wars Night.
