Lake County Captains News Release
(Comstock Park, MI) - The Lake County Captains (8-7, 38-45) defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps (8-7, 44-40) by a final of 9-2. Lake County used three homeruns in the ballgame en route to the victory. Jose Ramirez hit the third pitch of the ballgame over the right field wall and Lake County was off to the races in the first inning. It was 1-0 with Francisco Lindor on second base and new-comer Jake Lowery at the plate and Lowery hit a single to left field and the score was 2-0 Captains headed to the second inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, West Michigan got on the board. Jeff McVaney doubled and moved to third on a ground out. McVaney then scored on a wild pitch and the lead was cut in half it was a 2-1 game.
Lake County scored two more in the third inning, Jordan Smith un-loaded a homrun to right field his fourth of the season and the score was 3-1 Lake County. Bryson Myles singled and later scored on a single by Leonardo Castillo (who ended up with four hits in the ballgame). The score was 4-1 Captains. Luigi Rodriguez walked and scored after being trapped in a run down in the fourth inning and the score was 5-1.
In the fifth inning, with two runners on and two out, Zach MacPhee, who was batting for the first time, singled to center field and the score was 7-1 Captains. In the bottom of the fifth Edgar Corcino homered to center field his second of the year and it was a 7-2 Captains lead.
Alex Lavisky was responsible for knocking in the final two runs for the Captains. He hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, his sixth of the season and it was a 8-2 game. In the eighth inning with the bases loaded and no-one out Lavisky hit a sacrifice fly to left field and the final of the Catains nine runs scored and it was 9-2. Lake County tied a season high with 18 hits on the evening.
LHP Shawn Morimando (3-2) took to the mound for Lake County and got the win. Morimando pitched five innings, he allowed five hits, two runs, two earned runs four walks and three strikeouts. Morimando also surrendered the homerun to Edgar Corcino. Francisco Valera relieved Morimando and went two innings and did not allow a run while striking out one. Kyle Petter pitched the final two frames for the Captains
RHP Jeff Ferrell (2-3) took the mound for West Michigan and took the loss. Ferrell just lasted two and two thirds innings allowing seven hits, four earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. He also allowed two homers to the Captains. The bullpen didn't fare much better. Combined to pitch six and two thirds innings yielding eleven hits, five runs, four earned runs, they walked two and struck out three and also gave up one homerun.
Lake County will continue the road trip on Saturday night in Bowling Green, Kentucky against the Hotrods. The game is set to start at 8:05 PM. Lake County will send RHP Mason Radeke (5-2, 3.20) to the mound to start the game and Bowling Green will send LHP Ryan Carpenter (7-4, 3.74) to counter Radeke.
