Down to the Final Game

Giving up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning the Calgary Vipers (53-32) were defeated 6-4 by the Edmonton Capitals (55-32) in the first half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Calgary took early leads in the game of 2-0 and 3-2 but in both the first and the second innings the Capitals matched the Vipers runs. After three scoreless innings Edmonton took the lead for good in the sixth inning with three runs. Dusty Gober (7-3) took the loss by walking five in five and a third innings. With the Vipers need to final the back half of the double-header to claim first place in the North Division.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Jonny Kaplan doubled, Wilver Perez advanced him to third base with a groundout, Chad Ehrnsberger collected a sacrifice fly, with two outs C.J. Ziegler doubled, and Lino Garcia singled for a run batted in and a 2-0 lead.

Edmonton quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first when Enrique Cruz followed by Todd Linden walked and Brent Metheny drove both in with a double.

The Vipers took back the lead in the second frame as with two outs Kaplan launched his seventh home run of the season for a 3-2 advantage.

The Capitals again tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Carlos Duncan singled, Rex Rundgren walked, Daryl Arreola laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Matt Rogelstad collected a sacrifice fly for a 3-3 score.

Edmonton grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Tom Collaro doubled, Rundgren reached on a fielding error, Lou Santangelo drove in a run with a single, Rundgren scored on a second fielding error, and Linden doubled in one for a 6-3 lead.

Calgary closed out the scoring in the seventh frame when Perez doubled and Ehrnsberger singled in a run for a 6-4 final.

The Vipers conclude this series and the 2011 regular season in Edmonton with the second game of a double-header on Sunday August 28th at 5:00.

The 2011 North American League playoffs will start with Game 1 of the North Division Championship best of seven series in Edmonton at Telus Field against the Capitals on Tuesday August 30th at 7:00. Game 2 of the N.D.C.S. will also be in Edmonton on Wednesday August 31st at 7:00.

The series shifts to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday September 1st at 6:30 for Game 3 and on Friday September 2nd at 6:30 for Game 4. If necessary Game 5 will also be played in Calgary on Saturday September 3rd at 2:30.

If a Game 6 is necessary it will be back in Edmonton on Sunday September 4th at 2:00.

If a Game 7 is necessary it will take place on Tuesday September 6th at whichever team finishes the regular season in first place.
