
Calgary Vipers 5 Swept into Second Place

Giving up another three runs in the sixth inning the Calgary Vipers (53-33) were defeated 8-5 by the Edmonton Capitals (56-32) in the back half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games before 3371 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. With the loss the Vipers were swept in the twin bill and finish in second place in the North Division. Calgary once again took the early 2-0 lead in the second inning only to give up five runs in the bottom of the frame before rallying for three in the fifth to tie the game. Matt Hammons (0-1) took the loss by allowing all three runs in the sixth on three hits and one walk.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as C.J. Ziegler walked, Drew Miller singled, while both Louie Templeton and Jeff Giacomini collected run batted in base hits for a 2-0 advantage.
Edmonton responded in the bottom of the second when Brent Metheny homered, J.D. Closser followed by Tom Collaro walked, Rex Rundgren singled in a run, Rory Shortell singled to load the bases, Matt Rogelstad doubled in two, and Shortell scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 lead.
The Vipers tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth frame as with two outs Bryan Burke worked a 12 pitch at-bat for a walk, Wilver Perez singled to extend his on-base streak to 58 games, Chad Ehrnsberger singled for a RBI, and Ziegler drove in two with a double.
The Capitals retook the lead in the sixth inning when Rundgren doubled, Lou Pote was hit by a pitch, Rogelstad singled in one, and J.D. Closser drove in two with a base hit for a 8-5 advantage.
The 2011 North American League playoffs will start with Game 1 of the North Division Championship best of seven series in Edmonton at Telus Field against the Capitals on Tuesday August 30th at 7:00. Game 2 of the N.D.C.S. will also be in Edmonton on Wednesday August 31st at 7:00.
The series shifts to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday September 1st at 6:30 for Game 3 and on Friday September 2nd at 6:30 for Game 4. If necessary Game 5 will also be played in Calgary on Saturday September 3rd at 2:30.
If a Game 6 is necessary it will be back in Edmonton on Sunday September 4th at 2:00. If a Game 7 is necessary it will also take place in Edmonton on Tuesday September 6th at 7:00.
