Johnson City Doughboys News Release
Edwin De La Cruz hit a grand slam and the Johnson City Doughboys rolled to their first-ever win on Saturday night, a 13-7 triumph over the Kingsport Axmen on the road.
Cruz's grand slam came in the third inning and was the first home run of the season for the Doughboys.
Johnson City (1-1) fell behind 4-0 in the first inning but scored six in the third inning thanks to a two-run double for Jaxson Crull and Cruz's 400-foot blast. Kingsport (0-3) answered the bell and made it a 7-7 ballgame in the fourth inning, but Johnson City would do the rest of the scoring
RHP Chad Rogers (1-0) earned the win on the mound for Johnson City, throwing two innings in relief with five strikeouts. Cherokee Nichols helped lead the way on offense, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBIs, and three runs scored.
Kingsport pitchers issued ten walks on the night, helping Johnson City score four insurance runs in the eighth inning to put the game on ice.
Johnson City and Kingsport will finish their weekend series on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport with a seven-inning contest.
