Edmonton Elks News Release

Edmonton, AB – After nine seasons during which he distinguished himself as one of the CFL's toughest competitors and dominant players, Edmonton Eskimo defensive tackle Doug Petersen has announced his retirement.

A product of Simon Fraser University, Petersen spent the last four seasons with Edmonton after joining the club as a free agent in 1999. He suffered a foot injury in the 2002 season opener that limited his playing time and ultimately ended his season.

"Sometimes the body says it's time to go," Petersen said. "I really appreciate the time I had in Edmonton, but I'm looking forward to new challenges outside of football."

BC's second round selection (13th overall) in the 1992 CFL Canadian College Draft, Petersen spent two seasons (1994-'95) with the Lions and was a member of their 1994 Grey Cup winning team. He signed as a free agent with Montreal in 1996 and would spend three very productive seasons with the Alouettes. Petersen was named a CFL East All-Star in 1997 and 1998. In 1999, his first season with Edmonton, Petersen was selected the clubs' top Canadian by the Edmonton chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada. That season he scored his first, and only pro touchdown on a 61 yard INT return (Aug 20/99 @ Saskatchewan). In 2001, Petersen posted a personal best 56 tackles and was selected a CFL West All-Star.

"Doug's hard nosed, physical style was a throwback to a different era. He will be missed by the Eskimos and the CFL," Eskimo Head Coach Tom Higgins said. "We wish Doug well in life after football."
