Today's Pacific Coast League doubleheader between the Edmonton Trappers and the Tucson Sidewinders, originally scheduled to begin at 1:35 PM, has been postponed due to wet grounds. The games will be rescheduled at a later date. The Sidewinders return to Edmonton for a four-game series in mid-July. The Trappers have played three doubleheaders this season, splitting all of them. Edmonton begins a four-game road trip in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. The Trappers have turned their season around after a slow starts and are11-6 in their last 17 games.
Edmonton is coming off its most lopsided victory of the season, a 17-3 shellacking of the Sidewinders on Friday night at TELUS Field. The Trappers set season-highs for hits with 21 and runs in the contest, which also featured the club's biggest inning of the season. Edmonton plated 10 runs on nine hits in the fourth inning en route to the win. Every Trapper batter had at least one hit and one run, including starting pitcher Troy Mattes (1-0), who was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in his first start with Edmonton. The Sidewinders and Trappers rank one and two respectively in the league in batting.
Several Trapper players are off to good starts this season, including second baseman Luis Figueroa, who ranks sixth in the league with a .363 batting average. Utility man Edwards Guzman is tenth in the league with a .352 average and is tied for fourth with 38 hits. He is batting .444 (20-for-45) with two home runs and 11 RBI in 12 games at TELUS Field this season. Outfielder Terrmel Sledge is fifth in the league with a .452 on-base percentage. Sledge is batting .340 (18-for-53) with four home runs and 14 RBI in his last 14 games. Closer Julio Manon is tied for fifth in the PCL with five saves. He has allowed only one earned run in 11 appearances this season and currently has a minuscule 0.66 ERA.
The Trappers will hit the road for a short four-game road trip in Las Vegas, Tuesday through Friday. The two clubs have met four times this season with Las Vegas winning three of those games. The 51s are currently in first place in the South Division of the PCL. They have the best record in the league at 22-8 and boast the league's leading batter in Bubba Crosby, who is currently batting .400.
