Doubleheader Nightcap Goes to Braves: Tourists Take Game One

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves split a doubleheader with the Asheville Tourists Thursday evening, losing game one 6-4, but rallying in the ninth inning of game two for a 4-3 win.

The Tourists scored first in game one and would not give up the lead. Asheville notched two runs in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Brian Humphries and an RBI triple by Tyler Massey making it 2-0. Brian Humphries would score in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Casteel and the Tourists would add three more in the sixth for the 6-0 score. Rome would attempt a rally, scoring three runs in the sixth, highlighted by RBI doubles by Will Skinner and William Beckwith, and a run in the seventh, but would come up short and fall to Asheville 6-4.

In game two Asheville didn't waste any time getting on the board after back to back doubles in the first for the 1-0 lead. The Braves were quick to respond in the bottom of the inning on a Brandon Drury (1) solo homer to tie the game 1-1. Rome took the lead in the bottom of the third as Kyle Kubitza (6) and Beckwith (2) both drove solo shots over the wall giving the Braves the 3-1 lead. Asheville would respond in the sixth, manufacturing two runs after singles by Massey and Harold Riggins, a double by Sam Mende and a walk to David Kandilas to knot the game at three, but the Braves would battle back in the seventh. After one out, Skinner walked and was forced out at second on a Kubitza groundout. Kubitza then stole second and later scored on a base hit by Ryan Query to give the Braves the 4-3 victory.

Asheville's Chris Jensen (5-1) would record the win in game one. Jensen worked six innings, giving up seven hits and three runs before Jefri Hernandez (5) came in for the save. Rafael Briceno (2-5) was tagged with the loss. In game two, Ian Marshall (1-1) would prove victorious for the Braves in relief after coming into the game in the seventh for Ernesto Silva. Asheville's Russell Brewer (0-1) would be charged with loss.
