Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Lexington Legends took the series opener, 7-3, against the Hickory Crawdads on Thursday evening, before 2,652 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium .
Lexington (25-21) opened an early lead against LHP Victor Payano with tallies in the first and third innings. With runners at second and third and no one out in the first, 1B Zach Johnson bounced an RBI grounder to short that brought in 2B Delino DeShields, Jr. from third for the 1-0 lead. Then in the third, LF Chris Epps doubled the lead with a two-out RBI single, plating 3B Mike Duffy from second to make it 2-0.
The Crawdads (21-24) broke through against RHP Mike Foltynewicz (W, 6-1) and got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. SS Luis Sardinas led off with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by 3B Hanser Alberto. After a strikeout, DH Drew Robinson drove a two-out, RBI single back through the middle of the infield, scoring Sardinas to chip the deficit to 2-1.
Hickory then moved in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth frame. C Kellin Deglan led off with a single to center field, before racing around to third on a CF Jordan Akins double to left field. 1B Trever Adams then drove an RBI ground out to second base, enabling Deglan to race home for the 2-2 tie. With Akins at third base, 2B Rougned Odor drew a walk to put two runners on. Odor ranged too far away from first on a pitch in the dirt, starting a run down between first and second base. While the Legends tried to retire Odor, Akins took the opportunity to dart in from third and slid home safely at the plate, lifting Hickory into the 3-2 advantage.
Lexington, however, came right back in the top of the sixth against RHP Arlett Mavare (L, 1-2). With one down, SS Jimmy Howick knocked a double, before coming home on an RBI triple by DeShields, Jr. CF Jordan Scott then grounded an RBI single to right field, scoring DeShields to make it 4-3.
The Legends added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on another RBI base hit by Epps, and then a two-run homer by C Roberto Pena in the ninth accounted for the 7-3 final score in the Lexington win.
