Auburn Doubledays News Release

Auburn, NY - Led by solid pitching and timely hitting, the Auburn Doubledays swept a doubleheader from the Aberdeen IronBirds in front of 1,387 fans at Falcon Park on Friday night.

The sweep kept the Doubledays in first place in the New York-Penn League's Pinckney Division, a full game ahead of Williamsport and game and one-half lead over Mahoning Valley.

Powered by the right arm of Wirkin Estevez, Auburn took game one by the score of 4-1. Estevez, who worked five scoreless innings for his fifth win of the season, gave up just two hits and struck out four, dominating the IronBirds all night long.

Offensively, the Doubledays scored their runs in bunches, plating two runs in the first and fifth innings. Back-to-back walks in each inning led to Auburn's runs in each frame.

In the first, the Doubledays used a sacrifice fly by Matt Skole and an RBI groundout by Justin Miller to give them the early 2-0 lead. That lead was extended in the fifth when the Doubledays scored one run on a passed by and another on an RBI single by Angelberth Montilla, putting them ahead four runs.

On the mound, Auburn was led by the great start by Estevez and a nice finish by Colin Bates, who made his first appearance with the Doubledays since mid-July. Bates worked two scoreless and hitless innings, notching his second save of the season.

In game two, the Doubledays used early run support for Nathan Karns to lead themselves to an 8-2 win and a three-game sweep of the IronBirds.

A leadoff single by Billy Burns in the first for Auburn was turned into a run on a base-hit to center by Justin Miller. Three runs came home in the second on a two-RBI double by Jeremy Mayo and an RBI single by Billy Burns, increasing the lead to 4-0.

Meanwhile, Nathan Karns cruised, pitching five scoreless innings for his second win of the season. He got more run support in the fifth on a Matt Skole RBI single and Carlos Alvarez RBI double, putting the Doubledays up six runs.

Aberdeen got on the board in the sixth inning when Alex Kreis gave up two runs on three consecutive hits, including an RBI double by Wynston Sawyer. The Doubledays got those runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI single by Justin Miller, giving Auburn an 8-2 lead.

The IronBirds scored a run in the seventh off of reliever Travis Henke, but they couldn't mount a big enough comeback to overcome the six-run deficit.

Henke, despite giving up a run in the seventh, notched his first career save in the Doubledays win.

Auburn now turns their attention to the State College Spikes, who they meet in a three-game series, starting Saturday night at 7:05pm. Fans in attendance can enjoy post-game fireworks presented by Seneca Falls Savings Bank. For tickets, please visit www.auburndoubledays.com.
