Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - With a one-run lead and two outs in the ninth inning, the Doubledays seemed to be in prime position to break out of their three-game losing streak and get back into the win column. But, just like Game 1 of the series, the Scrappers' refused to go down easy.
A late inning surge pushed Mahoning Valley past Auburn on Saturday as the Doubledays dropped the series with a 4-3 loss.
Todd Peterson was nearly untouchable his first few innings on the mound for the Doubledays. The Nationals' 7th round pick of this year's draft held the Scrappers off the scoreboard for the game's first four frames while limiting Mahoning Valley to just two base runners.
While Peterson was holding down the mound, the Doubledays made quick work of getting on the board. Ricardo Mendez led off the home half of the first with a single and ended up on third on third when the Scrappers committed a throwing error trying to nab Caldioli Sanfler at first. With runners on the corners, Jake Randa drove in the first run of the game on an RBI groundout to give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead.
After a three up-three down second inning, the Auburn offense went back to work and put up another solo run. Ricardo Mendez collected his second single of the night and reached second on a fielder's choice. Randa, once again, came in clutch and knocked in Mendez, this time on a single to right field.
Todd Peterson - giving up only a single hit up to this point - ran into trouble in the fifth inning. The Scrappers led off the inning with a double from Michael Cooper, then tied the game at two-apiece when Johnathan Rodriguez launched his first home run of the season over the left field wall. A base hit and a stolen base put the pressure back on Peterson with one out, but the LSU product was able to work his way out of the inning with just those two runs scored.
But the tie was short lived. Sanfler, leading off the home half of the fifth, answered back with a dong of his own. Mahoning Valley starter Ethan Hankins put a pitch right in the heart of the plate, allowing Sanfler to take the 2-1 pitch deep to right field.
Trey Turner - coming into the game to relieve Peterson - tossed a quiet sixth inning but quickly fell into trouble in the seventh. A single and two walks loaded the bases, and the Scrappers quickly found themselves rallying with two outs. Turner was pulled in favor of Bocko, who got Bryan Lavastida to roll over on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
After Bocko finished up the seventh, he pitched a quiet eighth inning and was one out away from closing out the game in the ninth. But, with a runner on first, he allowed the go-ahead Scrappers run to score via a home run that nearly hit the foul pole.
Trailing 4-3, the Doubledays went down in order to end the game.
The Doubledays will be back in action Sunday at 4PM against the Snappers. Listen in on the action on fingerlakes1.com, milb.streamguys1.com, or the TuneIn app.
