Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Cyclones defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers by the score of 6-2 on Saturday evening. RHP Dominic Hamel (1-0) got his first Cyclones victory after striking out 10 and allowing just one unearned run over 6.0 frames.
The Grasshoppers jumped in front in the top of the first when Mike Jarvis worked a one-out walk, moved to second in a wild pitch and advanced to third on a passed ball before coming home on an RBI groundout from Jacob Gonzalez that gave Greensboro a 1-0 lead.
The lead would be short-lived however as Brooklyn jumped ahead in the bottom of the second. Alex Ramirez singled to start the frame and stole second to move into scoring position. JT Schwartz took advantage of the opportunity with an RBI single to centerfield to plate Ramirez and knot the score at 1-1. Jose Peroza followed with a single of his own to put runners on the corners and when Jaylen Palmer grounded into a double play, Schwartz trotted home to give Brooklyn a 2-1 edge.
The lead would swell an inning later when Stanley Consuegra had an RBI double that plated Matt Rudick and Nic Gaddis followed with a two-run homer that extended the Brooklyn advantage to 5-1.
A sacrifice fly from Jose Peroza in the fifth extended the Brooklyn advantage to 6-1 and rounded out the scoring for the Cyclones on the day.
Greensboro didn't go quietly though, as they pushed across a run, and loaded the bases in the top of the seventh against Nate Jones, but Nolan Clenney was able to get Endy Rodriguez to ground out to end the threat with the Cyclones still in front 6-2.
That's how the game would end, as Clenney and Dylan Hall combined for 2.1 scoreless frames to close out the Brooklyn win.
The series wraps up tomorrow at 2 p.m. with gates opening at 1 p.m. It's Gil Hodges Day and the first 1,000 fans in attendance receive a Gil Hodges statue. It's also a Sunday Family Funday with backyard inflatables, the first 500 kids receiving Dippin' Dots, and postgame Kids Run the Bases.
