Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
VICTORIAVILLE, Que. - The Saint John Sea Dogs clawed back from a 2-0 deficit Friday to advance to the President's Cup semifinals with a 3-2 win over the Victoriaville Tigres.
Zack Phillips scored Saint John's first goal, and also notched the game winner to punch Saint John's third ticket in four years to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's final four. Stanislav Galiev had the other goal, added an assist on the second Phillips marker and finished with a plus-3 rating, while linemate Jonathan Huberdeau had two assists. Jacob DeSerres made 22 saves for the win as the Dogs took the best-of-seven quarter-final series in five games.
Brandon Hynes and Carl-Antoine Delisle scored for Victoriaville and David Honzik made 42 saves
The Tigres put Saint John in a hole early, as Hynes scored on Victoriaville's first shot of the game at 1:21. Philippe Maillet took advantage of a Sea Dogs giveaway in the slot and set up a quick shot by Hynes for his sixth of the playoffs. Delisle was then credited with his second post-season goal at 6:32 on a strange play after the puck appeared to be underneath DeSerres. Jurco and Galiev had great chances late in the first, but couldn't beat Honzik.
Saint John struck at 1:13 the second after DeSerres denied a drive by Maillet. The Dogs came back on a 2-on-1 and Huberdeau fed Phillips, who got in behind the defence and beat Honzik. Nathan Beaulieu picked up the other assist. Galiev notched the equalizer at 5:38 of the middle frame, finishing a backhander for his seventh playoff marker after Danick Gauthier created a turnover.
DeSerres made a big left pad save on Maillet on a power play early in the third, then came up with another great save midway through the frame, diving to his right to rob Phillip Danault on rebound. Phillips scored the go-ahead goal after a turnover at the red line that led to a 3-on-1 and an incredible passing play. Phillips, on the left wing, fed Galiev in the middle, who slipped it to Huberdeau on the right, who sent the pass back across for Phillips to finish. Finish he did for his seventh of the playoffs at 12:54, which proved to be the game- and series-winning goal.
The Sea Dogs will open the semifinals at home next weekend. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday morning for Games 1 and 2, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23.
