Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The second round series between the Lewiston MAINEiacs and Montreal Junior will continue for two more days. That's because the Junior picked up a 5-4 win in double overtime, keeping the series alive at Verdun Auditorium.
Both teams got the offenses going in the first period, as the two sides combined for three goals, with the MAINEiacs leading 2-1. Kirill Kabanov broke the scoreless deadlock at the 8:54 mark on a power play for Lewiston. Kabanov received a pass from Michael Chaput along the goal line, shifted from backhand to forehand, and lifted a shot into the goal. The Junior answered 1:30 later on a delayed penalty, as Trevor Parkes deflected Jeremy Gouchie's shot in past a screened Nicholas Champion. A little less than three minutes later, Lewiston regained the lead, as Olivier Dame-Malka rifled home a one-timer for his fifth marker of the series.
The second period was a powerful one for the Junior, who pulled ahead on the scoreboard, while outshooting Lewiston, 19-3. The equalizer came early in the frame and on the man advantage, when Louis-Marc Aubry batted in a rebound off of Louis Leblanc's initial shot from the top of the right circle. Later in the period, it was Aubry again. This time, he fired in a slap shot from the left point, getting a deflection off of a MAINEiac to send it bouncing in.
Midway through the third period, the MAINEiacs drew even. Kirill Kabanov fluttered a pass across to Michael Chaput on a 2-on-1, and Chaput did the rest, ripping a wrist shot into the right side of the net. Later in the period, Montreal retook the lead, as Louis-Marc Aubry found a loose puck on the right side of the crease, and lifted it in past a sprawling Champion. With 1:15 remaining in regulation, Lewiston tied the score once again. Michael Chaput won a face-off to Olivier Dame-Malka, who drilled a slap shot home, sending the contest to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime session, the game proceeded into overtime, where Montreal decided the contest. Dylan Anderson picked up a loose puck at the top of the crease, and slid it through Champion's legs for the 5-4 win.
Jean-Francois Berube picked up the win for the Junior, making 23 saves on 27 shots. Nicholas Champion was saddled with the loss for the MAINEiacs, making 31 saves on 36 shots.
The MAINEiacs and Junior will play game six in Lewiston on Sunday night at 7:00.
